Israeli Fire Killed Spanish Peacekeeper in January, Israeli Official Confirms
Version 0 of 1. JERUSALEM — The death in January of a Spanish member of the United Nations peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon was caused by Israeli fire during a clash, an Israeli security official confirmed Tuesday. A military investigation concluded that the peacekeeper, Cpl. Francisco Javier Soria Toledo, had been killed as the Israeli military responded to a cross-border attack against its forces by Hezbollah, the Lebanese militant organization. The Israeli security official said the results of the investigation had been shared with the Spanish government. Two Israeli soldiers were also killed in the clash, when Hezbollah fired antitank missiles at two vehicles in a disputed area along the border in retaliation for an Israeli strike that had killed several Hezbollah fighters and an Iranian general in Syrian territory. |
