Newtownards: Man dies in County Down airfield 'crash landing'

A man has died in an air crash in Newtownards, County Down.

The man was in a two-seater light aircraft that crash landed just off the runway at Newtownards Airfield shortly before 11:30 BST.

The Northern Ireland Fire Service said crews found a man inside the aircraft. He was then taken to the Ulster Hospital in Dundonald.

Police said that air accident investigators will now lead an investigation into the crash.

A spokesperson for the Northern Ireland Fire Service said the man was not trapped in the wreckage when he was found. He was the only person on board.

The Ulster Flying Club, which operates the airfield, has declined to comment.
