Leinster v Bath: European Champions Cup – live! Leinster v Bath: European Champions Cup – as it happened
(35 minutes later)
5.12pm BST17:12
Well. A controversial finish, I guess, as for my money Garces got that final call wrong with Bath looking to set themselves for the drop-goal that would have sent them through. Alas, it’s Leinster who continue to fly the Celtic flag in Europe and in truth they deserve it. Matt O’Connor’s side weren’t at their best, but they made the most of an error-strewn Bath performance to prevail.
That’s it from me, as I’m off to MBM Clermont v Northampton now. Bye!
5.10pm BST17:10
Full-time: Leinster 18-15 Bath
80 min Now it’s on for Bath as Homer takes it up to the 22 and Garvey carries it on. They’re tight to the touchline, but move it inside. Oh and Garces gives a penalty for holding on! It looked to be hands in the ruck from O’Brien, but Garces says otherwise. Madigan kicks it out and Leinster are through to the semi-finals.
5.08pm BST17:08
79 min Leinster scrum, on their own 22. Bath drive powerfully, but it comes out between Heaslip’s feet. Reddan picks up and his kick is charged down by Faosiliva! There’s a chase for the line, but it’s Fitzgerald who just gets back to it first and dots it down for a 22 drop-out.
5.06pm BST17:06
78 min Ford flings a pass back inside for Banahan when they go to the backs, but it’s forwards! Heaslip is down at the moment. Bath have now made 16 handling errors and conceded 11 penalties; if they don’t pull off the comeback then those are the numbers people will talk about.
5.05pm BST17:05
77 min Stringer loops around and stabs a kick through, but Fitzgerald is covering inside his 22. Reddan kicks long and Bath run it back, going through the phases and Burgess carries into the 22.
5.04pm BST17:04
76 min In fact it’s not quite that far up, more like 30m out. Batty finds Hooper.
5.03pm BST17:03
75 min Rob Kearney can’t continue and is replaced by D’Arcy. Bath secure the ball from the restart and Ford kicks long to Heaslip, who crashes back up over halfway. Leinster batter away at the Bath defence, looking for a penalty, but the Louw steals it on the floor and wins a penalty. Ford to touch on the Leinster 22, on the right.
5.02pm BST17:02
Penalty (Ford 74) Leinster 18-15 Bath
Cool as you like and this is going down to the wire...
5.01pm BST17:01
73 min Ford dummies to kick and steps up into the Leinster half before Homer carries it on down the right. It comes inside to Burgess, then O’Brien goes off his feet 30m out, right in front of the posts. Ford will kick for goal...
5.00pm BST17:00
72 min Another Leinster change as Denton enters the fray. Rob Kearney is still on, but looks to be limping. Leinster have a lineout midway inside the Bath half, but Strauss over throws it and the two sides exchange kicks.
4.58pm BST16:584.58pm BST16:58
71 min No matter as Toner taps it back on the Leinster side and Fitzgerald jinks cooly out of danger. Kearney kicks long, but Watson runs it back into Leinster territory. Matt Garvey holds on on the floor though and Leinster get the penalty just inside their own half.71 min No matter as Toner taps it back on the Leinster side and Fitzgerald jinks cooly out of danger. 4.57pm BST16:574.57pm BST16:57
70 min Strauss finds McCarthy and Reddan box kicks to touch, but he hasn’t got it out his 22. This is a good chance for Bath; you feel they have to go through the backs though.70 min Strauss finds McCarthy and Reddan box kicks to touch, but he hasn’t got it out his 22. 4.55pm BST16:554.55pm BST16:55
68 min Kearney slides a delicate, shallow grubber kick down the right and into touch. If Bath can get up the other end and get a try now then Leinster are seriously going to regret this negative play.68 min Kearney slides a delicate, shallow grubber kick down the right and into touch. 67 min Faosilivia is also on for Bath, not sure whose place he’s taken though. Sorry. Anyhow, Leinster have a scrum about 5m inside the Bath half and, though Heaslip is wrapped up by Stringer, they secure clean possession.67 min Faosilivia is also on for Bath, not sure whose place he’s taken though. 4.53pm BST16:534.53pm BST16:53
66 min Leinster are kicking everything away now, playing solely for territory. Bath run it back again and Joseph pops a cute inside pass out the back of the hand for Agulla, but the winger can’t hold on. A huge cheer around the Aviva as Peter Stringer comes on for Young and indeed for his 100th European appearance. Tom Homer is also on, for Agulla.66 min Leinster are kicking everything away now, playing solely for territory. 63 min Matt Garvey comes on for Dave Attwood, who hasn’t been at his best since the start of the Six Nations. Bath have a lineout on halfway, which they win, then carry the ball up through the phases. I should also mention how excellently neutral Brian O’Driscoll has been on commentary. Ford chips out on the full; that was a really poor decision.63 min Matt Garvey comes on for Dave Attwood, who hasn’t been at his best since the start of the Six Nations. 62 min Quick ball from Leinster and slick hands swing it left, then right across the field. The Irish province deserve great credit for using the scrum as an attacking platform today. Leinster kick ahead but then Watson launches a thrilling counter, stepping out of his 22 and zippping up to the 10m line, his step leaving defenders on their backsides. It goes right via Ford, but then Agulla knocks on.62 min Quick ball from Leinster and slick hands swing it left, then right across the field. A good point this. Bath’s poor handling has seen them give away too many scrums and they’re getting stuffed in that area. Well, that was rather familiar. Smart kicking and excellent territorial play from the Irish to accompany some big meaty hits. Handling errors, poor discipline and the concession of far too many kickable penalties from the English, who at least scored a nice try but find themselves 10 points down. Afternoon folks. Today is about one thing, and one thing only: revenge. The last time an English side went across the Irish sea and tried to take Dublin, things didn’t go too well for them. They were battered and bruised, not outfought as many expected but rather outsmarted. They got sucked into traps, gave penalties and possession away and found themselves kicked to death by a team that plays deathly dull anti-rugby but plays it mighty effectively (actually that’s kinda ironic when you think about it). A few short weeks ago in the Six Nations, England were given a royal stuffing by Ireland, more so than the 19-9 scoreline suggested.Afternoon folks. So now England’s George Ford, Anthony Watson, David Attwood and Jonathan Joseph, humbled that day, go back to the Aviva stadium to face Leinster with revenge on their minds. Well, revenge and proving themselves proper European heavyweights, reaching the semi-finals of Europe’s premier competition and turning around English teams’ poor recent away record in European knock-out rugby. Bath, beaten twice in the opening two rounds of the pool stages, are, by some distance, the underdogs today. However, they came back from the dead in said pool stages to qualify and produced one of the very finest performances of any team this season when winning in Toulouse. Leinster on the other hand have wobbled a wee bit; they’re off the pace in the Pro 12, are without a win in three and didn’t fully convince in winning their pool. It could just be that they’re feeling the effects of actually having to qualify for the competition now. Clearly part of the Anglo-French conspiracy to sideline the Celtic nations, this whole getting-in-on-merit thing.Bath, beaten twice in the opening two rounds of the pool stages, are, by some distance, the underdogs today. However this revenge-mission-but-not turns out, be it Die Hard 3 (brilliant) or I Spit on Your Grave (terrible), let’s celebrate the return of the best show in northern hemisphere rugby anyhow. After what was, let’s face it, a pretty poor, stodgy Six Nations, saved by its final weekend (the whole of which I missed with flu), the European Champions Cup should provide us with tense, high-grade, attacking rugby. Indeed there are a few sides – Leinster, Toulon, Clermont, Saracens and Northampton – who you’d fancy to challenge for the Six Nations title. Never mind tradition, this is where it’s at this spring. However this revenge-mission-but-not turns out, be it Die Hard 3 (brilliant) or I Spit on Your Grave (terrible), let’s celebrate the return of the best show in northern hemisphere rugby anyhow. The number of Six Nations stars on show today lends weight to this theory. The hosts make nine changes and feature nine of the championships’ winning players in their starting XV. You can add internationals Fergus McFadden and Isaac Boss to that lot, not to mention Richardt Strauss, Jack McGrath, Marty Moore, Eoin Reddan and Gordon D’Arcy on the bench. Bath too have shuffled their side from that which consigned London Welsh to relegation last Sunday, with Watson, Joseph, Ford and Attwood all coming in as well as Wales’ prop Paul James..
