The National Trust has snapped up a run-down car park in Wales for a whopping £3 million, and it was probably worth it.

Although it might seem like an extortionate amount of money, the strip of tarmac overlooks Rhossili Bay, Swansea, which boasts one of Britain’s most spectacular beaches.

National Trust manager Paul Boland said: "We want to ensure that we provide Gower with a first-class car park for a first class destination.

"We believe this will secure the future of a very important area of natural beauty, renowned for its wildlife, environment and archaeology."

Rhossili, Gower Peninsula It was once described as "the supermodel of British beaches" by The Independent and is consistently ranked among the best in Europe.

Last year it made its way into Trip Advisor’s Top 10 beaches in the world, alongside those with pristine white sands and crystal-clear waters found in Australia, Mexico and Brazil.

Rhossili Bay was featured in the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games, where a youth choir sang "Bread of Heaven" live on the beach while it was broadcast at the Olympic Stadium.

The Bay has also featured in a number of television programmes, most notably Doctor Who and Torchwood.

Parking at Rhossili will be free for National Trust members, while other visitors are expected to be charged £4 for the day.
