At least two officers were injured in an exchange of fire in the capital, according to a report by Turkey's Dogan news agency seen by Reuters. A policeman received a minor injury during the incident, while a second person escaped, Istanbul governor Vasip Sahin told the Press Association.
Footage on the Dogan website showed a person lying on the ground, as police used vehicles to close off the street in the Aksaray area of central Istanbul. It was not immediately clear who was behind the attack.
An official at the police headquarters confirmed to Reuters that gunfire was heard outside the building, but declined to comment on any casualties, saying all units were on alert and that a statement would be released late.
