A woman has been arrested after allegedly killing her 20-month year old son in a restaurant toilet in New York.

Latisha Fisher, 35, reportedly took Gavriel Ortiz-Fisher inside a toilet in 5 Boro Burger on Sixth Avenue before holding her hand over his mouth and suffocating him.

According to a police source she then “blamed the devil” for her actions.

The source related to the New York Daily News that another woman walked into the restaurant toilet and saw Fisher holding her hand over the still living boy’s mouth.

Fisher reportedly allayed fears by explaining that this was how she generally put Gavriel to sleep.

At some point, police say, the mother locked herself in the bathroom. Customers and employees eventually became worried when the queue for the toilet grew long and staff eventually managed to force their way inside.

A message posted by Fisher days before the tragic incident

When they entered they reportedly discovered the child unconscious and foaming at the mouth.

Fisher apparently tried to "swat away" restaurant staff who were attempting to perform CPR on the toddler.

Gavriel was then rushed to Bellevue hospital, where he later died. Fisher was taken into custody at the scene.

Speaking to the NY Daily News the boy’s maternal grandmother, Merial Fisher, 54: “It’s really hard, it’s really unbelievable. I know my daughter loves her son.  I don’t know what happened. It’s just so sad.”

Latisha Fisher’s Facebook page, on which she uses the pseudonym ‘Lola Honey,’ contains a number of photos of her and Gavriel together.

In one, posted on 31 January she describes him as “Our little bud.” As recently as 19 March she posted a number of photos of herself and her son smiling together.

On 26 March she posted a photo with a caption that hinted at mental instability. It read: “She’s banged up mentally and emotionally. Literally and metaphorically. But every day she walks outside with a smile on her face because that’s who she is.”

On 27th March she wrote cryptically: “How did everything change on me. I went to sleep feeling well.”

Neighbours in her apartment building on Fisher’s Pitt Street described her as tumultuous.

Neighbour Carolyn Lawson said: “She needs help. It doesn’t make sense. I think she was on medication for whatever problem she had, but I’m assuming she wasn’t taking her meds.”
