Spain’s interior ministry says police have arrested four members of a family, including two minors, who were allegedly about to travel to Syria to become jihadi fighters.

A statement from the ministry said a couple and two boys, both aged under 16, were arrested in the north-eastern city of Badalona, near Barcelona.

The boys were suspected of planning to travel on Tuesday to Syria, via Morocco and Turkey.

The ministry said authorities believe another son of the couple joined Islamic State in Syria and died last year.

It added that the two minors had left school in Spain to study the Qur’an in Morocco.

Details of the family’s identity have not been released.
