Plaid Cymru will today vow to use its influence in a hung parliament to “unleash Wales’ economic potential”.

It will launch its election campaign with a call for extra powers and resources for Wales, support for “permanently rebalancing the UK economy” and an end to austerity.

Its leader, Leanne Wood, said the finely-balanced election provided her party with an unprecedented opportunity.

“The direction of the next government could come down to how strong a presence Plaid Cymru secures in Parliament at the election,” she said.

Plaid Cymru, which currently holds three parliamentary seats, has said it would work with the SNP and the Green Party.

Labour and the Conservatives agreed that Wales faced its most important election for a generation as they launched their Welsh election campaigns.

Labour, which holds 26 seats in Wales, said its priorities were a strong economic foundation, higher living standards, immigration controls, investment in the NHS and helping the next generation to do better than the last.

Stephen Crabb, the Welsh Secretary, said: “After five years in Government, we’ve put Wales back on the pathway to prosperity with more people in jobs, wages rising and record investment in Wales.”
