Pratt, assistant representative in Liberia of the United Nations Population Fund, known as UNFPA, a reproductive health agency, said there needed to be a greater emphasis on informing the public in Liberia about the importance of safe sex after Ebola recovery, while at the same time avoiding further stigmatizing survivors. “From the public health perspective, we should have intensified our messaging around abstinence, and maybe even prolong the period, since we’re not very, very sure of the cutoff point, given the nature of the virus,” Dr. Pratt said last week before the results of the tests on the man’s semen were known.
“We’ve thought about it, we’re planning it, but we hadn’t kick-started it.”
There is also a need to look at whether survivors are heeding the advice they get at discharge from Ebola treatment units to abstain from sex or use condoms.
