Paedophile jailed for raping boys

A man jailed in Dublin for raping two brothers aged nine and 11 had already served two separate sentences for child abuse in the 1990s. Philip Sullivan, 45, of Botanic Avenue in Glasnevin, was released in 2000 but began abusing children again four years later. The judge told the Central Criminal Court that Sullivan had shown he did not respond to treatment programmes. He sentenced him to life in prison and refused leave to appeal the sentence. "Under normal circumstances these latest (offences) would have warranted a 12-year sentence reduced to 10 years on mitigation, but his previous convictions have escalated this case into a whole different category," Mr Justice Carney said. Sullivan was a friend of the boys' family. He committed the offences at an apartment and in their home. The judge said Sullivan had destroyed young lives and abused the trust that had been placed in him. |
