NSW election: poll gives Mike Baird's Coalition a comfortable lead with one day to go
Version 0 of 1. The Baird government possesses a commanding lead over the NSW opposition on the eve of the state election, a new poll shows. The latest pre-election Galaxy/Daily Telegraph poll shows the Coalition leads Labor 55% to 45% on a two-party preferred basis. The poll, of 1,300 voters taken over Wednesday and Thursday nights, shows Mike Baird is easily the preferred premier, leading Luke Foley by 53% to 25%. The Coalition’s primary vote was steady at 45%, while Labor’s fell two points to 34% on previous polls. The Greens were on 11% (up one), while 10% nominated independents or others. The results represent a swing of 9.2% to Labor since the 2011 Coalition landslide. If that was applied uniformly across the state, the Coalition would be looking at the loss of about 15 seats, but would comfortably retain Speaking on Friday morning, Labor’s federal infrastructure spokesman Anthony Albanese said if Foley were elected on Saturday, Tony Abbott would be soon after removed as federal Liberal leader. “Tomorrow, for example, when people in NSW vote, if ... Luke Foley is elected premier tomorrow then Tony Abbott will be gone next week,” he told Network Nine. Albanese dismissed suggestions there was pressure on federal Opposition Leader Bill Shorten, due to a turnaround in the government’s polling. “If the election was held tomorrow Bill Shorten would be the prime minister,” he said. |
