John Terry signs new Chelsea contract until end of 2015-16 season John Terry signs new Chelsea contract until end of 2015-16 season
(35 minutes later)
John Terry has signed a one-year contract extension at Chelsea, committing to the Premier League leaders until the end of next season. Chelsea announced the captain’s new deal on Thursday, three weeks after the manager, José Mourinho, guaranteed Terry would be at Stamford Bridge next term. John Terry has extended his stay at Chelsea into an 18th professional season after signing a new 12-month deal at Stamford Bridge, with José Mourinho saying that sentiment had played no part in the award of the extension.
The 34-year-old’s deal was set to expire at the end of this season and the new contract is in line with the club’s policy of offering those over the age of 30 only one-year deals. The former England international, who hoisted his 13th major honour as a Chelsea player when the team claimed the Capital One Cup earlier this month, has made 661 appearances for the club since his debut in 1998. Terry’s career had appeared to be winding down over Rafael Benítez’s interim stewardship at the club in 2012-13, when niggling injuries had hampered his impact, but has been revived under Mourinho and is an ever-present in the Premier League to date this term.
Terry has made 661 appearances for Chelsea, scoring 63 goals and his honours include the Champions League, Europa League, three Premier League titles and five FA Cups. He won the Capital One Cup this month. “This new contract is not to say: ‘Thank you very much’,” said the Chelsea manager. “It is because John continues to perform. He is a top defender. I am happy that he completely deserves this new contract after a season where he has already played 40 matches.”
He said on chelseafc.com: “I’m delighted to have signed an extension to my contract with Chelsea. After adding another major trophy to my collection this month I hope myself, the players and manager can continue to bring success to our club. Playing for this great club makes me so proud. And as always I would like to thank the fans who have continually supported me.” The league leaders have long since implemented a policy of offering players over 30 only 12-month extensions, with this now the second Terry has signed.

The emergence this season of Kurt Zouma as a centre-half of real potential has added to Chelsea’s options and, while another defender may be added to the ranks at the end of the season, Terry’s form had demanded that his stay at the club be prolonged. The 34-year-old is hoping to claim his fourth Premier League title this term, adding that to three League Cups, five FA Cups, a European Cup and the Europa League.
