The Guardian won the Laureus Sports Website award at the prestigious awards run by the SJA, which is the world’s largest national organisation for professional sports journalists.

In their citation for the Guardian’s site, the judges said: “Through digital innovation, great journalism, industry-leading design and its approach to social media, the winning sport website sets the bar high in every area that matters to sports fans everywhere.”

The Guardian’s chief football correspondent Daniel Taylor was highly commended in the keenly contested new football writer of the year category, as was chief sports correspondent Owen Gibson in the investigative sports writer section.

There were also highly commended accolades for Donald McRae in the sports feature writer section, and Vic Marks in the cricket writer of the year category.
