An American diplomat in Pakistan has been found dead at his home in Islamabad after apparently committing suicide, Pakistani police say.

The US embassy in Islamabad named the official as Keith Ryan. It said that his death would be investigated but were no indications of foul play.

Mr Ryan worked for the Department of Homeland Security.

The department is responsible for protecting the US from possible terror attacks and to "secure the nation".

"Our esteemed colleague, Mr Keith Ryan, passed away this morning in Islamabad," a statement from the US embassy in Islamabad said.

The BBC's Syed Shoaib Hasan in Islamabad says that it is the first time such an incident has occurred in Pakistan involving a US diplomatic official.

"The body was discovered from a bathroom in Mr Ryan's residence," a local police official told the BBC.

"There was a gunshot wound on the temple and a pistol was found nearby."

Mr Ryan was due to return to the US on Monday after completing a year-long posting in Islamabad.

A colleague who came to collect him for his morning flight discovered his body.
