NI Assembly debate spending plans MLAs vote to back spending plans
(about 5 hours later)
Northern Ireland's assembly members are debating the executive's first programme for government. Northern Ireland's assembly members have voted in favour of the executive's first programme for government and investment strategy.
Despite some opposition in the draft stages from the Ulster Unionists and the SDLP, the proposals are expected to receive assembly approval. Following a six-hour debate, the plans were passed by 60 votes to 24.
Following the opposition, additional finance was allocated to the health and social development departments. SDLP MLAs voted against the proposals although its only Stormont minister, Margaret Ritchie, voted in favour.
However, the Alliance Party will vote against the programme and also the budget, being debated on Tuesday. The plans include wide-ranging economic initiatives, setting a target of attracting almost 7,000 jobs through inward investment.
