"It did not matter to them that this man had worked hard for his position in life, that he had a promising career in the legal system ahead of him," he told the jury.
"All that was best in life was ahead of him but to them he was no more than a means to an end and they treated him accordingly.
"Tom ap Rhys Pryce was a proud man and there is a real prospect that he did not submit to the demands of the robbers.
"He may well have taken them on and if he did, the robbers rose to the challenge."
Mr Horwell said at least one knife was used and Mr ap Rhys Pryce was stabbed in the hip and twice in the chest.
CCTV footage
He told the court all they took was an Oyster card, his bank cards, driving licence and mobile phone.
Mr Horwell alleged Mr Carty and Mr Brown had attacked another man, Kurshid Ali, in the station 20 minutes earlier.
The jury was shown CCTV footage showing Mr Ali being robbed on a platform.
The police later discovered the defendants were members of a gang who stabbed two victims during the course of robberies three weeks before, Mr Horwell told the court.
