Idolator report that ex-Libertine Carl Barat is here.
NPR’s picks of the “music you missed on Friday” includes Japanese screamo types Mahousyoujo-ni-naritai. Well we were listening to Spanish shoegaze, so ner.
We’ve also not yet heard Win Butler’s DJ set under the name DJ Windows 98, but apparently he plays a bit of Shania Twain’s Man! I Feel Like a Woman! before whipping it off and playing Bad Reputation by Joan Jett.

We’ve just posted Hannah Ellis-Peterson’s five-star review of a corsuscating Run the Jewels show, their final one of the festival. She writes:
Run the Jewels are not a duo to shy away from political controversy, tackling race and police brutality in their tracks, with Killer Mike leading the chorus of condemnation following the events in Ferguson last year. Tonight is no different, with El-P taking a not-so-subtle jibe at the “driveling, warmongering, paedophile leaders that we’ve elected”, and dedicating another track to “everyone in Ferguson trying to do the right thing”.
This is an entirely unrestrained set, helped along by a crowd who really do give it their all. Bodies are thrown carelessly into each other, and as El-P and Killer Mike break into the chant of “lie, cheat, steal, kill, win”, the air is filled with a pulsing sea of pumping fists. Run the Jewels may be a late-career renaissance for the pair, who are both entering their 40s, but as their set proves, they are worthy of every column inch of hype.

Lanre here. While we’re on the subject of branding here’s my short write up of Hot Chip’s show, which took place in a purpose built Samsung world:Lanre here. While we’re on the subject of branding here’s my short write up of Hot Chip’s show, which took place in a purpose built Samsung world:
One thing that’s unavoidable at SXSW is branding. It’s everywhere. There’s branded ponchos, sponsored booze, and so many buses advertising TV shows it’s like you’re binge watching on Netflix via some weird form of osmosis. Hot Chip, like A$AP Rocky the night before, played a Samsung party which you needed a bright pink wristband to get into, and which took place in a den dedicated to the mobile operator. Once inside there was free (sponsored) food, drinks tokens and a dancefloor that looked a bit like the inside of a Tiger Tiger. Hot Chip road tested new single Huarache Lights before firing through Don’t Deny Your Heart, One Life Stand and Boy From School. It’d be an exaggeration to say they looked like they were having a good time doing it, although Al Doyle was pretending to conduct the rhythm section, but it was a clinical, professional performance, which didn’t feel out of place in a huge sponsored wonderland. One thing that’s unavoidable at SXSW is branding. So with revenues from record sales declining, how will bands be able to afford to play in 10 years? Will Butler pointed out something that has become increasingly apparent – that more and more, it’s bands’ parents who pay for them to make music. “As the rich get richer their kids can do whatever the hell they want.” This analysis was backed up by Krugman, who added that the share of cash going to a few bands at the top – presumably the likes of Madonna and the Rolling Stones – has increased, meaning that everyone else gets a shrinking size of the pie.So with revenues from record sales declining, how will bands be able to afford to play in 10 years? The only real cheer was provided by Will Butler, who pointed out that the internet has facilitated “a golden age of folk art – all these stupid internet jokes. In a stuffy, sun-trap of a backyard the four piece never quite ignite. The look the part as they all sport Bret ‘The Hitman’ Hart style sunglasses, but the songs feel like they’re about to drift off on the breeze rather than plant themselves in your memory. Lyrically, the group don’t pull their punches. Drone is a track all about taking mansplainers but as a live prospect (at the moment) there’s not the same gusto. In a stuffy, sun-trap of a backyard the four piece never quite ignite. The same criticism can’t be made of Mitski, who follows Chastity Belt and immediately grabs people’s attention with a shocking pink bass. As part of a trio the Brooklyn-based singer, whose album Bury Me At Makeout Creek, was a dark horse in many end of year lists in 2014, delivers. On record her voice is intense, moving from a gentle hum into high-pitched ad libs, and live it’s even more impressive. From opener Townie all the way to the final track - which is somewhere between Willie o Winsbury and a Kate Bush song - she is completely engaging and delivers the kind of performance that doesn’t belong in a concrete yard surrounded by portable toilets. The same criticism can’t be made of Mitski, who follows Chastity Belt and immediately grabs people’s attention with a shocking pink bass. The brief show reaches a peak with his performance of True Love, a song that Jesso Jr wrote too late to get it on to the album, but which set the internet alight on its release last July. “True love, true love, true love, true love” he wails repeatedly in his expressive and soulful tones, and later looks up the sky as he asks “Why can’t you just love me?” from the album track Without You. It’s simple but moving to watch, and rather than alienating the audience with an overbearing teen angst, we too are drawn into his stories of love and loss. Dressed in a tight white T-shirt that gets soaked in sweat over the course of the gig, Chance shimmies to the side of the stage like James Brown (crashing into the speakers, but if this wasn’t intentional, he styles it out), raps with bulging-veined intensity and dexterity, and in Brain Cells, has a bona fide anthem. So it’s a bit of a mystery why half the crowd drifts away during the course of what is only about a 25-minute set. Undeterred, Chance completes his set in bravura style with Sunday Candy and quits while he’s ahead, leaving the audience to return to their Tinder profiles or whatever it is they’re finding more compelling.Dressed in a tight white T-shirt that gets soaked in sweat over the course of the gig, Chance shimmies to the side of the stage like James Brown (crashing into the speakers, but if this wasn’t intentional, he styles it out), raps with bulging-veined intensity and dexterity, and in Brain Cells, has a bona fide anthem.
