Woman is charged over 'blackmail' Woman threatened to dismember man
(about 3 hours later)
A 31-year-old woman has been arrested following an investigation into blackmail in the Newtownbreda area of south Belfast, police have said. A woman threatened to cut off part of a man's body and leave him for dead, a police officer has told a court.
She is expected to appear in court later on Saturday charged with blackmail, making threats to kill and possession of class C drugs. Joanne Lindsey Farrell, 31, from Newtownabbey is charged with blackmailing the 50-year-old for £10,000 and threatening to kill him.
The PSNI said officers from the organised crime squad had conducted an investigation into blackmail. Newtownards Magistrates Court heard he was accused of being a "dirty old man" with soft porn. A threatening letter was put through his door, it was said.
The woman will appear before Ards Magistrates Court, the PSNI said. Ms Farrell, who works in a chemist, is also charged with having cannabis.
A detective constable told the court it was an "extremely nasty" offence involving long, protracted and persistent threats against the man.
He told the court there was a wealth of evidence against the accused, including forensic evidence, fingerprints and closed circuit television images.
A defence solicitor said that the mother-of-one would be contesting the allegations as she wanted to prove her innocence.
The defendant, whose address could not be revealed, was freed on bail.
