The Duchess of Cambridge was partially responsible for making Downton Abbey a hit in the US, the show's creator said.

Lord Fellowes was giving his royal guest a tour earlier of Ealing Studios where the TV production was filmed.

He said during a trip to the US in 2011, she was asked if she had heard of the show, to which she replied that she had both watched and enjoyed it.

Her comments were widely reported in the media which had helped raise public awareness of the show, he said.

During her behind-the-scenes visit, the duchess was shown where the period-style costumes are made.

She was also escorted through the hair and make-up departments before being given the chance to watch live filming for series six.

After meeting the cast, the duchess said: "Thank you so much for letting me into your world."
