A man has been arrested on suspicion of offences under the Terrorism Act after "potentially suspicious material" was found in North East Lincolnshire.

The 34-year-old man, from Grimsby, was arrested after police searched a house in the town on Thursday morning.

He was taken to a police station in West Yorkshire for questioning by the Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU) in Leeds.

A Humberside Police spokesman said: "The property has been cordoned off but presents no risk to local residents."

Specialist teams are at the scene to assess the material and police will remain there while further searches are carried out.

'Remain vigilant'

The alarm was raised by Humberside Police officers who were at the property after a warrant had been executed in connection with a separate criminal inquiry.

Supt Victoria Thompson, of Humberside Police, said: "I recognise that local people may have concerns as a result of this arrest and our Neighbourhood Policing Team will be out in the area as usual to speak to anyone who may have concerns.

"Local police officers are meeting with representatives of all sections of the community to keep them as informed as we can about the investigation. We value their support whilst inquiries continue.

"We would ask people to remain alert but not to be alarmed and we are grateful for the assistance, support and understanding of people locally.

"We would always ask people to be vigilant and report anything they feel is suspicious to local police."
