The University of Oklahoma has expelled two students - both of whom were members of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity - school officials say were ringleaders behind a racist chant captured on video.

The video has gone viral and has resulted in the university banning the fraternity from campus and ordering the eviction of members from the fraternity house. More expulsions could follow, according to reports.

David Boren, president of the university, closed the SAE house on Monday and told all members of the fraternity that they must have all their belongings out of the house by the end of the following day, according to the Wall Street Journal.

“I have emphasized that there is zero tolerance for this kind of threatening racist behavior at the University of Oklahoma. I hope that the entire nation will join us in having zero tolerance of such racism when it raises its ugly head in other situations across our country,” Mr Boren said.

The university had said it would consider expelling the students responsible for the chant. The names of the students have not been released to this point and no immediate information is available on further expulsions.

The eviction and expulsions are the latest reactions to a video that apparently shows members of University of Oklahoma’s chapter of SAE chanting “There will never be a n— SAE. You can hang ’em from a tree, but he’ll never sign with me. There will never be a n—SAE.”

The university said it will continue to investigate the incident.
