Thousands of teachers and other public service workers are staging a one-day strike in France over jobs and wages.

Public sector unions organised big protest marches in several cities.

The education ministry said about 34% of teachers had joined the strike on Thursday, while unions put the figure higher, at about 55%.

In November a similar day of action took place and separate strikes by transport and energy workers over pensions brought widespread disruption.

The unions say public sector wages are not keeping pace with inflation.

Budget Minister Eric Woerth has announced plans to cut 22,900 public sector jobs. He urged the unions to hold talks with him on pay and conditions on 18 February.

The strike comes a day after a special commission presented President Nicolas Sarkozy with far-reaching proposals for boosting economic growth.
