Not long after open the FTSE 100 stood down 14.7 points, or 0.21%, at 6861.81. In lunchtime trading the FTSE 100 stood down 96 points, or 1.40%, at 6779.96.
The UK's fourth biggest grocer WM Morrisons was the biggest gainer, up 2.74%, after partner Ocado said its gross retail sales rose 15.2% in the first quarter. Security firm G4S was the biggest gainer, up by 2.7% after announcing a return to profit, after winning overseas contracts.
