A traveller left stranded after his horse died is hitting the road again, thanks to an online campaign.

John Treagood, 79, was stuck in Exeter after the death of his Irish cob horse Gildor in January.

Supporters have collected £9,500, enough to buy a new horse called Misty and a new wagon.

Mr Treagood said: "I really appreciate the support from everyone and I'm quite overwhelmed with the attention."

Former university lecturer Mr Treagood turned his back on mainstream life about 40 years ago and has become a feature on rounds around Devon, Cornwall and Somerset.

Hundreds of people from as far away as Australia donated to the fund.

Cornwall-based photographer Richard Horsfield, who launched the campaign, said: "Thank you to everyone like myself who has been touched by this gentleman's story, and proven that there are still good, generous people in the world."
