A bus carrying Hindu pilgrims skidded off a hillside road and fell into a gorge in western India, killing at least 38 people, police said. The accident took place around midnight in Nasik district, about 125 miles (200kms) north of the city of Mumbai. Police said the driver lost control while negotiating a sharp bend. At least 40 people have been injured. The bus had a capacity to carry 45 passengers, but it was carrying about 70 people, police said. Road accidents are common in India and claim hundreds of lives every year. Most of the accidents are blamed on reckless driving, old vehicles and poorly-maintained roads. |
