Tyre blaze 'will burn for days' Tyre yard fire causes disruption
(about 4 hours later)
A huge blaze at an old tyre yard near Coatbridge in North Lanarkshire is expected to burn for days. A major fire involving 400 tonnes of tyres at a yard near Coatbridge in North Lanarkshire has caused disruption on the rail network.
About 400 tonnes of tyres caught light at the old Shanks/McEwan yard by the A8, near the Eurocentral business park. The blaze, which started at about 2000 GMT on Sunday, damaged overhead rail lines and trains between Motherwell and Cumbernauld were suspended.
Strathclyde Fire and Rescue said the fire started at about 2000 GMT on Sunday, burning intensely and sending up a thick, black plume of smoke. Residents near the old Shanks/McEwan yard by the A8 have been advised to stay indoors and keep windows closed.
The service said it threatened overhead railway cables and the Cumbernauld to Lanark railway line had been closed. The fire was expected to burn for the rest of the day.
About 15 to 20 firefighters were continuing to tackle the blaze.
Steve Fitch, group commander with Strathclyde Fire and Rescue, said: "We've had a look at the fire in daylight and we think it is going to burn for at least the rest of the day.

"The situation is constantly being reassessed, however.
"Black smoke has been heading in a north west direction towards Shawhead.
"Residents should stay indoors if possible and keep windows shut as a precaution."
Smoke could be seen for miles around and drifted onto the A8.
Train services between Cumbernauld and Motherwell and Motherwell and Coatbridge Central are suspended.
Glasgow to Whifflet services start and terminate at Kirkwood.
The cause of the fire at the tyre yard is not yet known
A replacement bus service is in place and First ScotRail said there may be short-notice cancellations, alterations or delays.
About 25 firefighters were involved in the incident at its height, using large capacity ground monitors to direct water jets to the seat of the blaze.About 25 firefighters were involved in the incident at its height, using large capacity ground monitors to direct water jets to the seat of the blaze.
Ian Ramage, of Strathclyde Fire and Rescue, told BBC Scotland: "The problems with a blaze like this are water sources, the nearest water source for us is about half a mile away, which is 20 lengths of hose. Ian Ramage, of Strathclyde Fire and Rescue, told BBC Scotland: "We were also met with a large, intensive fire and very heavy smoke, which has got some hazardous material in it from the tyres.
Smoke from the blazing tyres could be seen for miles around "I think it will be a couple of days before we are clear from the site."

"Police have informed the local residents to stay indoors and keep the windows closed.

"Because the rail line is about 10m away from the fire, we've had to put a complete stoppage on the line - there's a possibility that the overhead line equipment's been affected by the heat from the fire as well and this will probably be closed for some considerable time."
Appliances from Cumbernauld, Coatbridge and Hamilton community fire stations were also involved in tackling the blaze.Appliances from Cumbernauld, Coatbridge and Hamilton community fire stations were also involved in tackling the blaze.
