A "huge" blaze an old tyre yard near Coatbridge in North Lanarkshire is expected to burn for days. | |
About 400 tonnes of tyres are alight at the old Shanks/McEwan yard by the A8, near the Eurocentral business park. | |
A spokesperson for Strathclyde Fire and Rescue said the fire started at about 2000 GMT, sending a plume of thick black smoke into the air. | |
She said it threatened overhead railway cables, and the Cumbernauld to Lanark railway line has since been closed. | |
'Close to line' | |
The spokeswoman said: "Around 400 tonnes of old tyres are ablaze, generating a huge thick black smoke plume. | |
"The location of the incident and its proximity to nearby railway lines hasnecessitated the stoppage of trains on the main Cumbernauld to Lanark rail line. | |
"Around 25 firefighters are involved at the incident, utilising large capacityground monitors to direct water jets to the seat of the blaze. | |
"It is anticipated that Strathclyde Fire and Rescue will be in attendance forsome considerable time." | |
Strathclyde Fire and Rescue said fumes from the fire were not believed to be posing any danger to nearby residents. | |
Appliances from Cumbernauld, Coatbridge and Hamilton Community fire stations are also involved in tackling the blaze. | |
The cause of the fire remains unknown but police are also monitoring the situation. |
