A 20-year-old man was shot when two men burst into a takeaway in Greater Manchester.

Police were called to the China Garden takeaway on Chester Road, Stretford, at about 2045 GMT on Saturday.

The injured man was taken to hospital and is said to be in a critical condition.

Police believe the shooting happened when the men, one holding a gun, ran into the takeaway and a number of shots were fired.

Superintendent John Graves, from Greater Manchester Police, said: "This appalling crime happened on a busy street close to a busy pub.

"It is easy to jump to conclusions about the motive behind incidents like this but we have no intention of doing that.

"We have a young man in hospital fighting for his life today."

He added that extra officers would be patrolling the area.
