An armed gang who shot dead a Briton at his home in Kenya escaped with the equivalent of £5,300, an African television news channel has revealed.

Graham Warren died at his Watamu home, about 150 miles (241km) north of Mombasa, Kenya Television Network said.

Mr Warren, who was from Northampton and aged in his 60s, died on Friday night after he and his wife Christine apparently disturbed the gang.

Police hunting the killers have made two arrests in nearby Malindi.

Kenyan police believe Mr Warren and his wife had returned home after a night out with two friends from the UK when they surprised the gang.

Police chief Gregory Waikwa, appearing on KTN, said: "These robbers had already taken positions in the house and they also had taken position at the gate.

"They opened the gate for the owner to come in only to attack him.

"The owner, I believe, resisted and as a result of that resistance he was shot in the chest."

Family members are understood to be flying to Kenya from England.

A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokesman said the High Commission in Kenya was in contact with the man's family and providing assistance.

The couple, whose home overlooks the Indian Ocean between Malindi and Watamu, have a daughter Sam who lives with her husband in Duston, Northampton.

They sold their Northampton home and business to move to Kenya in 2004.

Restina Pembroke, who bought the Warren's former home, said: "It is terrible news. He was such a nice guy.

"He struck me as a very honourable man and wanted everything sorted out properly when we bought the house. Christine is a lovely woman.

"We were surprised when they said they were retiring to Kenya, but I think they loved the country and were having their dream home built there."
