Version 0 of 1.

A city centre railway station was closed by police hunting an escaped convicted killer.

Lee Nevins gave prison guards the slip on Tuesday while being treated at Sunderland Royal Hospital.

The 24-year-old was serving a sentence at Durham's Frankland Prison for killing a man in 2006.

Police say they received information that he was travelling into Newcastle, and closed Central Station while they searched a train, but he was not found.

The station was closed for about 40 minutes on Saturday evening, and police have thanked the public for their patience.

Cause alarm

It was not revealed which train he was thought to be travelling on.

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: "Police responded to information that escaped prisoner Lee Nevins was to arrive at Newcastle Central train station at 1900 GMT

"The decision to close a train station is a significant one and can cause alarm to the public.

"We would like to stress that the station was closed in connection with the search for Nevins and for nothing else."

Nevins was sentenced to a minimum of 17 years for the murder of Lee Jobling, whom he attacked and left for dead on Gateshead's Leam Lane Estate.
