Letters: Sandra Chalmers and her sense of fun
http://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2015/feb/12/sandy-chalmers Version 0 of 1. A quarter-century on, I cherish still a memory of Sandy Chalmers and her sense of fun from a – literally – passing moment in 1990. It was the day of the Sony Radio Awards’ grand lunchtime gong-giving in the Dorchester hotel’s ballroom – a major British radio event. As I walked down Park Lane, I could see the cabs disgorging the celebrity guests at the ballroom entrance. But a little nearer stood a solitary female figure … Sandy, then BBC Radio’s head of publicity. I wrote about broadcasting. We knew each other well. But, as I approached, no flicker of recognition. Only when I was about to pass her, on this Mayfair pavement with a long history of dubious assignations, did she speak, deadpan, barely catching my eye: “Business is terrible, darlin’.” |
