Anti-terror police have made arrests in Merseyside and the West Midlands in apparently unrelated operations.

The West Midlands operation was said to be Syria-related but few details have been released. A 23-year-old woman in the Walsall area was held on suspicion of preparing for acts of terrorism and a 33-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of failing to disclose information.

Separately, a 31-year-old man was held on suspicion of being concerned in the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism during raids in Rainhill, St Helens, and the Kensington area of Liverpool. Police said searches of the properties could last days.

DCS Tony Mole, of the North West Counter-Terrorism Unit, said: “The NWCTU are currently conducting a joint investigation with Merseyside police following the receipt of information from law enforcement agencies.

“We are taking all measures necessary to ensure public safety, which is our primary concern. Members of the public will see a lot of police activity at a number of addresses in the coming hours and possibly days. However, it is absolutely vital to stress that there is no current threat or evidence of an imminent attack.”

In a third unrelated case, a 27-year-old man from the Heaton area of Bradford who was arrested last year has been charged with offences under section 2 of the Terrorism Act 2006 in relation to social media postings, and will appear before Westminster magistrates in London on Friday.
