A BBC reporter in the region said that the militant group attacked Bosso with heavy weapons, causing residents to flee and or hide indoors. Yacouba Soumana Gaoh, the governor of the Diffa region around Bosso, told the BBC that the Islamists had been successfully pushed back after clashing with Nigerien troops.
Troops from Niger and Chad, who have a base in Bosso, reportedly engaged in fierce battles trying to repel the Islamists. Mr Goah said the number of casualties was unknown but he believed no civilians were harmed during the fighting.
