Davydenko seals Masters Cup spot Nalbandian seals Masters Cup spot
(4 days later)
Russian Nikolay Davydenko became the fifth player to secure his place at the season-ending Masters Cup in Shanghai. Defending champion David Nalbandian secured his place in the eight-man Masters Cup without hitting a ball.
Despite an early exit from last week's St Petersburg Open, other results meant Davydenko qualifies for the £2m event. The Argentine booked his spot in Shanghai when rival James Blake lost to Tommy Haas at the Paris Masters.
David Nalbandian, James Blake, Tommy Robredo, Fernando Gonzalez, Mario Ancic, Tommy Haas and Tomas Berdych are vying for the remaining three places. Spain's Tommy Robredo also booked his berth in China with a 6-4 7-6 (7-1) win over France's Paul-Henri Mathieu.
This week's Paris Masters is the last qualification event for the Masters Cup, which begins on 12 November. Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Ivan Ljubicic, Andy Roddick and Nikolay Davydenko have already qualified for the event, starting on 12 November.
Nalbandian, Blake and Robredo are currently occupying the qualification spots, with Gonzalez and Ancic closing after performing well last week. Blake now sits in the eighth and final qualifying place but he can be overtaken by Mario Ancic if the Croatian ninth seed wins his quarter-final on Friday.
Marcos Baghdatis is ahead of Haas and Berdych in the ATP rankings but will miss the Paris Masters with injury. Tommy Haas, the German 10th seed, could also still make the China finale but he needs to win the Paris title and hope Ancic falls before the final.
In addition to Davydenko, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Ivan Ljubicic and Andy Roddick have already qualified for the Masters Cup. Nalbandian, who is not playing in Paris because of a stomach injury, beat Federer in a dramatic five-set final to win last year's Masters Cup.
