Next Tuesday is Halloween, and this year Americans will spend nearly $5bn trying to scare each other to death. A week later is the national election, with control of the United States Congress up for grabs. I can take the severed limbs and fake scars. But I'm not sure I can take the political scare ads in these final days before the 7 November election. Because more than anything, it appears, this election is about fear.A week later is the national election, with control of the United States Congress up for grabs. It's either going to be a tidal wave, with a sea of disgust washing out the most encrusted incumbents. Or picture this, from the Democratic side, in this case directed against Clay Shaw, a veteran Republican member of Congress from Florida. Fade in with the Mission Accomplished banner - you know, the one that flew on that Navy carrier shortly after President Bush announced the end of major combat in Iraq. Cue the scary music, like the soundtrack from Psycho just as Janet Leigh gets knifed in the shower. Cut to a picture of Bush and vice-president Cheney. The Democrats need to pick up 15 seats to gain a majority in the House of Representatives - the lower chamber, with 435 members. Fifteen seats was a dream in January. Now they're talking about picking up 30 seats and they say 60 seats are in play. But there are other scary things as well - like Mexicans. About 12 million Mexicans are in the US illegally. To some, it's a source of renewal and cheap labour. If either party wanted a clear victory, it should simply place universal health care at the top of its manifesto. This would secure the votes of at least forty million Americans who cannot afford medical insurance or are denied it because of pre-existing conditions.Joe, Swansea
I love American election time, as it's so incredibly entertaining! Scandals, bitching, infighting, scare tactics, they make our elections look even duller than they already are!Ed, London UK
It just disgusts me that American political campaigning has come down to using fear in order to obtain a vote. Just shows they do not have anything of any worth to say to potential voters.Gordon , Fife, Scotland
They are squandering $100,000,000 on a 10 day election campaign!! Just think what they could do for their country with that money. That alone should be advert enough to Americans vote Democrat. Daniel Saldanha, Coventry
Having travelled extensively in the US I have to say that politically, they're vastly more polarised than the UK. Familes align themselves with a particular party. It comes as no surprise to me that the parties are prepared to resort to virtually any measures to try and sway the voters who normally would remain loyal. With the amount of cash floating around every politician must be desperate to make it count for their political survival. Dave, Fleet
I have to say that this article made me smile. Finally someone is writing about the obvious backstabbing and scaremongering that is the bread and water of American politicians. It's just a shame that any American reporter who spoke out on this topic would quickly be shunned by the public at large as being 'un-American'
It's no longer about who has the best policies, but instead who can save them from sexed up dangers from across the borders.
America is certainly in danger of becoming a very enclosed nation, fearing to look East of the Hudson into the land of 'wind and ghosts', in case they see something that upsets them.Andy Peters, Bolton, UK
