Version 0 of 1.

Two lesbian activists found themselves sitting in the row in front of Vitaly Milonov, the architect of Russian’s anti-gay laws, on a flight from Moscow to St Petersburg.

So the women took a selfie of themselves kissing to protest against his anti-gay policies, featuring the sleeping politician in the background. The image went viral after they posted it on Instagram.

One of the women, identified on social media as Kseniya Infinity, wrote: “Who’s that in the background??? MILONOV! And we don’t give a f***! We’re flying to our favourite club, Infinity.”

The selfie-kiss protest comes as Milonov is drafting a bill in the Kremlin to close a loophole that has allowed same-sex couples to marry in Russia.

After the incident, Kseniya Infinity uploaded more photos on to her VKontakte social media page, with a description of what took place on the plane. She added that Milonov covered his face with his tablet when he realised what was happening.

The activist gave her explanation of the selfie on her VK Post, according to a translation by the news site Meduza:

Lots of people are asking me about my last post: did we really go and kiss in front of Milonov? Was it really Milonov? Maybe it was just somebody who looked like him? What was the flight like? and so on. Here are my answers: Yes it was really Milonov! As fate would have it, he was sitting in the row right behind us.

Kseniya added:

The whole flight from Moscow to St. Petersburg, Milonov said nothing to us. We staged the photoshoot in front of him, and he hid behind his tablet, when he realised.

We’re all super happy. Him—probably not so much. But who cares! Attached is the rest of the photoshoot. #milonov #antihomophobia

The politician later told Flashnord news agency that the women “made a bunch of silly faces, photographed themselves, and ran to the back of the plane, where they sat down and didn’t show their faces until the end of the flight”. Milonov also called the women “crazy fools” and “idiots”.

Milonov has previously called for Apple CEO to be banned from entering Russia over fears that he would bring Aids or Ebola into the country and asked for him to be banned for life.

The senator was also influential in the country’s “gay propaganda” law, which was signed into law by the president, Vladimir Putin, in June 2013.

People reacted to the news on social media with support for the women’s action.
