Landslide in Indonesia kills 10

A landslide in the Indonesian province of Papua has killed at least 10 people, including a six-month-old baby, local officials say.

Heavy rain triggered a landslip that engulfed a hospital housing complex in the regional capital, Jayapura.

Five survivors are being treated in the hospital itself, which was not damaged, even though it was only 50m away.

Landslides and floods are common in Indonesia, especially during the rainy season between December and February.

At least 120 people were reported dead or missing after landslides and floods hit the main island, Java, on 26 December.

Environmentalists say deforestation caused by uncontrolled logging has left hillsides more vulnerable to collapse.

Indonesian reports say the rain that caused the latest landslide in the early hours of Tuesday flooded some streets in Jayapura to a depth of 2m.

Strong winds made the problems worse.
