The Housing Executive has taken over two weeks to just measure replacement windows for an elderly north Belfast couple whose home was attacked.

The Mervue Street home of Norah and Alex Hunter, 78 and 81, was attacked in the earlier hours of New Year's Day.

A workman only arrived on Tuesday to measure up. Loyalist paramilitaries are being blamed for the hammer attack.

"With the holiday period, it has taken a little longer than normal," said a Housing Executive spokeswoman.

As the windows are "wooden framed double glazed units" they now need to be specially ordered, added the spokeswoman.

However, she said that the Housing Executive "hopes to have the work completed this week".

Norah Hunter said: "We've just to sit here with the windows like that - there's nothing we can do.

I blame the UDA and the UVF and I'm not worried about them knowing that I've said that Norah Hunter

"I was going to put one (a window) in myself, but why should I for the Housing Executive."

"I blame the UDA and the UVF and I'm not worried about them knowing that I've said that."

"If they said they done it and it was a mistake that would satisfy us. My husband's Scotch and he was never in a fight in his life. Years ago if there was a fight he left his pint and came out."

"My granddaughter's house down in Midland (Terrace) was also attacked and all them two do is work, and they have a wee child of three."
