Version 0 of 1.

The forthcoming Kurt Cobain documentary Montage of Heck will include original, unheard music from the late Nirvana frontman.

Kurt Cobain’s daughter, Frances Bean, will executive-produce the new documentary about the late Nirvana singer, billed as the first “fully authorised” movie about Cobain. According to HBO - via Loudwire - the film “provides no-holds-barred access to Cobain’s archives, home to his never-before-seen home movies, recordings, artwork, photography, journals, demos, personal archives and songbooks” and “features dozens of Nirvana songs and performances, as well as previously unheard Cobain originals”.

Directed by Brett Morgen, who also helmed the Rolling Stones’ documentary Crossfire Hurricane, the film has been in development since around 2006.

Cobain’s widow, Hole frontwoman Courtney Love, granted Morgen’s crew unprecedented access to the singer’s personal and family archives, including home movies, journals and these unearthed demos. In a previous statement by the director, Morgen described the vault of archived Cobain material that he was given to sift through: “I discovered over 200 hours of unreleased music and audio, a vast array of art projects (oil paintings, sculptures), countless hours of never-before-seen home movies, and over 4,000 pages of writings.”

Montage of Heck will be broadcast in the spring, and will also screen in UK cinemas. It is named after one of Cobain’s mixtapes, which was circulated online in 2014 and included his own original music with audio from the radio as well as other people’s records, such as Sammy Davis Jr leading into Iron Butterfly, Kiss into Daniel Johnston.
