Celtic & Spurs linked to Beckham Strachan laughs off Beckham link
(about 1 hour later)
Celtic and Tottenham may be interested in signing Real Madrid midfielder David Beckham in January. Celtic manager Gordon Strachan has laughed off suggestions he has a chance of signing David Beckham, who is also being linked with Tottenham Hotspur.

"I have David's telephone number," Celtic manager Gordon Strachan told the Sunday Telegraph. "He is a wonderful player who is still very fit." Spurs boss Martin Jol told the Mail on Sunday of the Beckham link: "I'll sit down and have a think about it."
Spurs boss Martin Jol is also a Beckham fan and told the Mail of Sunday: "I'll sit down and have a think about it." But Strachan told BBC Sport: "It was an off-the-cuff remark to someone. I don't think that is every going to happen."
However, Strachan is convinced Beckham, who joined Real in a £25m move from Manchester United in 2003, will not return to the Premiership. Strachan had been quoted by the Sunday Telegraph as saying that he had Beckham's telephone number and that he recognised him as a "wonderful player who is still very fit".
"He could play at the highest level for another three years and I know he would not go to another club in England," said Strachan. Celtic have already signed Beckham's fellow midfielder, Thomas Gravesen, from Real during the summer. But Strachan's chief executive has him on a tight budget and Strachan joked: "I think this will have given Peter Lawwell a heart attack.
"It would be wonderful if it happened and you never say never.
"But you have a chat in the tunnel with someone tongue-in-cheek and you never think that it is going to end up being reported seriously."
Strachan joked that he knew that Beckham's wife, Victoria, was "a big fan of Tunnock's wafers".
"She's had enough of the sun and there's nothing wrong with some decent rain for 10 months a year," he said.
