Daily Mail to sponsor student journalists in partnership with Stephen Lawrence trust

The Daily Mail is to sponsor two student journalists from disadvantaged backgrounds to attend its trainee scheme in partnership with the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust set up to honour the murdered teenager. The successful applicants will be paid a competitive salary while they train once the course starts at the end of August and will then be considered for a full-time post after completion. Stephen’s mother Doreen Lawrence, now Baroness Lawrence of Clarendon, said: “The Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust’s mission is to transform the career opportunities of aspiring, talented young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. I am delighted to announce the Stephen Lawrence trainee reporter scholarship in partnership with the Daily Mail.” Stephen was stabbed to death at the age of 18 in an unprovoked racist attack in south-east London, in 1993. The Mail ran an award-winning campaign to bring the killers to justice. Since the trust was set up in his name, it has awarded more than 100 architecture bursaries – the profession which A-level student Stephen hoped to enter. Aspiring journalists from lower income households, or who attend or attended a non-fee paying school or are the first generation of their immediate family to attend university, are “strongly encouraged to apply” for one of two places on the Mail’s 14-month journalism course. |
