Sienna Miller is set to return to Broadway to play the nightclub singer Sally Bowles in the hit musical Cabaret.

The actor, who is enjoying a career renaissance with roles in the films American Sniper and Foxcatcher, will replace Emma Stone for the final six weeks of the show’s Broadway run. It is set to close on 29 March.

Many high-profile actors have played Sally Bowles, including Judi Dench in the first British production in 1968, Liza Minnelli in the 1972 film and Jane Horrocks in the 1993 Sam Mendes production, on which the current revival is based.

The most recent Broadway run saw Michelle Williams play Bowles to a mixed critical reception, before Stone succeeded her.

Miller made her Broadway debut in Patrick Marber’s After Miss Julie in 2009. She got a rough ride from critics, with the New York Times’s Ben Brantley saying that Miller “never had a firm grasp” on the role.

However, Cabaret, which plays at the site of the legendary New York disco Studio 54, has been a smash hit, taking $1,051,850 over New Year’s week. It stars Alan Cumming as the Emcee, who has won multiple awards for the role, including a Tony in 1998.
