Man judged unfit to stand murder trial after claiming Slayer were involved

Version 0 of 1. A man charged with murdering his father has been judged incompetent to face trial, after claiming the metal band Slayer were involved in the crime. Leroy Smith III, who has already confessed to the 2014 murder of Leroy Smith Jr, was in court in Maine for a competency hearing held to determine whether he was mentally fit to be tried. He had previously blamed the killing on a lifetime of sexual abuse, but in his latest retelling added: “I had a gun pointed to my head and was sworn to keep secret of what I am, and they refused investigating any persons that are responsible. The whole entire music group Slayer was there. I was told then that what they did was too overboard. I sent them a message on Facebook and that Jeff Hanneman, the guitarist, takes his own life. He took his own life May 5 of 2013.” Although Hanneman did die in 2013, the official cause of death was cirrhosis of the liver. While attempting to make his speech, the judge warned Smith that he would have to be removed from the court if he continued talking. According to CentralMaine.com, Smith had previously claimed to be a political prisoner. A court evaluator said: “he had delusions that he thought he was God, grandiose delusions he was the best guitarist in the world.” Smith’s own attorney believes the defendant suffers from a disconnect with reality and doesn’t fully comprehend the reality of the trial: “He thinks our role is to subpoena society and to subpoena certain heavy metal bands to come to explain why they won’t let him play with them.” Following the judge’s ruling, Smith will now be remanded at Maine’s Department of Health & Human Services. |
