The house was later sealed off as police examined the crime scene. Neighbours said the dead woman had not been seen for about a week. A post-mortem examination revealed Ms Edwards had died after an assault. The area remains sealed off as further forensic examinations are carried out.
Flowers were placed outside the house, which residents said was the scene of "intense" police investigations. A spokesman for Northumbria Police said a 21-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of murder.
The spokesman said the man was being questioned at nearby Bedlington police station.
Neighbours said the dead woman had not been seen for about a week.
Flowers and sympathy messages were placed outside the house.
