Boston Marathon bombing trial moves forward as court denies appeal to delay
(4 months later) | |
A federal appeals court on Saturday denied a last-ditch request by lawyers for the accused Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev to delay his trial on charges of killing three people and injuring more than 260 in the attack.
Attorneys for Tsarnaev, 21, had also sought to have the trial moved out of Boston, the site of the 15 April 2013, bombing, the largest mass-casualty attack on US soil since 11 September 2001.
Tsarnaev is accused of carrying out the bombing, which occurred near the finishing line of the race in downtown Boston, with his older brother, Tamerlan. Three days after bombing, as the Tsarnaev brothers attempted to flee the city, federal prosecutors contend that they shot and killed a university police officer.
Tsarnaev has pleaded not guilty to 30 charges connected to the April 2013 explosions that killed three people and wounded more than 260. If convicted, he could face the death penalty.
Tamerlan Tsarnaev was shot dead by police; Dzhokhar was found hiding in a dry-docked boat in a Boston backyard.
Jury selection in the trial at the US district court in Boston is due to begin on Monday. |
