Real Madrid have told Manchester United Gareth Bale is not for sale at any price. United have been linked with a summer move for Bale, who signed for the European champions in a world record £85.3m transfer 16 months ago.

Louis van Gaal has been told there is a significant amount of money to spend if he feels his United squad need strengthening, and Bale’s signing would be a considerable coup.

The Real Madrid president, Florentino Pérez, said: “We have not received an offer from Manchester or any other club for Gareth Bale. We would never listen to any offer for Bale, no matter what the fee.”

Bale, who came on as a substitute in Real’s 4-2 friendly defeat against Milan in Dubai on Tuesday added: “Manchester United? I’m happy in Madrid. I love the city, the weather and the club. I’m eager to win more silverware here.“I have a contract with Real Madrid until 2019 and could remain for more years after the end of it.”

Van Gaal refused to discuss a potential bid for Bale at a press conference last week. “I discuss that with my CEO [Ed Woodward] and not with anyone of the media,” said Van Gaal, who spent £155m on six players during his first transfer window as the United manager.

United were in the running to sign Bale when he left Tottenham in September 2013. The 25-year-old was part of the Madrid team who won the Champions League last season and he also won the Copa del Rey in his first year at the club. Bale has scored 11 goals this season for Real, who are top of La Liga.
