The Hong Kong police arrested 12 protesters blocking several roads as pro-democracy demonstrators returned to a site they had occupied for more than two months before the police dispersed them, officials said Thursday. The police used pepper spray and batons overnight to break up the protest in the Mong Kok neighborhood and arrested demonstrators on charges that included assaulting a police officer and failing to produce proof of identity, a police statement said. The statement said two police officers were injured. Protesters have been demanding that residents of Hong Kong be allowed to elect their top executive in 2017 from an open list of candidates. The central government requires that candidates be selected by a committee that it controls. The Hong Kong police said Friday that they had arrested 37 protesters accused of blocking five roads in the Mong Kok neighborhood and disobeying orders to disperse. They arrested 12 protesters overnight Wednesday in the same area, which democracy advocates had occupied for more than two months before being dispersed.
