A murder inquiry has begun after a woman was found dead at a flat in Staffordshire.

The body of the victim, aged in her 30s, was found at Dibden Court, Honeywall, Stoke-on-Trent at 10:30 GMT, Staffordshire Police said.

Paramedics were called but were unable to revive her and she was declared dead at the scene.

A 49-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is being held in custody, a spokesman said.

The area has been cordoned off around the flats while a forensic examination of the scene is carried out.

Supt Jane Hewitt from Staffordshire Police said: "We are working to support the family of the woman at this very tragic and difficult time and I urge people not to speculate about the incident and allow the detectives to establish the circumstances which led to the death of the woman."

The suspect is expected to be interviewed by detectives later.
