Springhill deaths: New inquest into army killings of July 1972

The Northern Ireland Attorney General John Larkin has directed that new inquests into the deaths of people killed by the British army in west Belfast in 1972 are to be opened.

Five people were killed on 9 July 1972 in Springhill in Ballymurphy.

Mr Larkin directed inquests to be opened into the deaths of Margaret Gargan, John Dougal, David McCafferty and Patrick Butler.

Fr Noel Fitzpatrick was also shot.

Mr Larkin was responding to a letter from a solicitor on behalf of the Gargan, Dougal, McCafferty and Butler families.
