A teenager allegedly tried to push a baby in a buggy away from its mother while she was distracted looking through a supermarket's frozen food section, police have said.

Merseyside Police turned up at Morrisons in Southport, Merseyside, at 4.50pm after a report of a “distressed and intoxicated” girl acting “erratically”.

Security guards at the store had detain the girl after she allegedly tried to push the pram containing a baby away from its mother.

The girl was “spoken to about her behaviour” by police and was driven home.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police confirmed that officers had attended the supermarket and outlined events.

“Merseyside Police can confirm officers were in attendance at the Morrisons store in Southport town centre yesterday following a report of a teenager acting erratically,” the spokesperson said.

“At about 4.50pm a report was received that a 16-year-old girl was acting erratically inside the store and, at one point, had attempted to push a pram with a child inside away from its mother.

“Security were alerted and the girl was detained immediately. A patrol attended and the girl was found to be intoxicated and distressed. She was taken home having been spoken to about her behaviour.”

A spokesperson for Morrisons said the matter was being dealt with by police and declined to comment.
